A comprehensive review of all Wirral’s playing pitches is currently taking place as part of a new strategy looking at the long-term development of the borough’s outdoor sporting facilities.
The review will cover all outdoor facilities for football, rugby, cricket, hockey, lacrosse, bowls and tennis and will assess existing and future needs in terms of pitch quality, quantity and location.
Managed by a steering group including representatives from Wirral Council, key national governing bodies for sport and Sport England, the review will inform the strategy for the next 10 years.
Wirral Playing Pitch Strategy Steering Group Chair, Mark Smith said: “We are pleased to be moving forward with this key strategy for Wirral which will guide future investment and planning. It will also look at key issues such as how to best provide weather-resilient pitch facilities for the future.”
The Council has appointed technical sports consultancy Knight, Kavanagh and Page (KKP) to carry out the review which will cover facilities in the public, private, voluntary and education sectors.
Representatives from KKP will liaise with sports leagues, clubs and other project partners over the coming months – undertaking interviews, questionnaires, site surveys and meetings to discuss use of sports pitches and facilities.
