Foundation Years Trust (FYT) is looking for a new trustees to join our Board to guide the charity through its next exciting period.
FYT is based in Birkenhead and works across the Wirral Borough. We are also linked at national level with a range of partner institutions.
What we do
The key to social mobility is to take action in the first five years of a child’s life. These critical foundation years are when a child’s propensity for learning is established – and they set the course for the years to come.
Children from lower income families frequently start school already 6 – 18 months behind their peers and this attainment gap tends to persist throughout the child’s school life.
However, the evidence shows that parents’ positive influence on their child’s early development can override the impacts of poverty and social class on the attainment gap. What happens at home in the first five years is incredibly powerful: what parents do is more important than who they are.
FYT is building on this evidence, to create a momentum for change amongst parents and nursery teachers and practitioners. We support parents to recognise and value their critical role in their child’s early development and we help them build on existing skills to promote their child’s early development. We support professionals to build trusting relationships with parents, to enhance the support around the child in the first five years.
How you can benefit from joining our Board
FYT is proud to have an extremely strong board of trustees who represent expertise in a variety of fields. Our Chair is a nationally and internationally renowned academic in the early years sector. Our board provides strong links with the national policy sphere and our ambition is to influence early years policy through evidencing the impact of the work we do with parents in Wirral.
We are also proud that our Patron, HRH Duchess of Cornwall, is extremely supportive of our work, which reflects her personal interest in early literacy and learning.
The next three years are an extremely exciting time for the charity as we focus in on evaluating our impact and share our findings more widely. Our trustees will be part of this journey, guiding our strategy and supporting the management team to maximise our impact.
What we are looking for in our new trustees
Some of our current trustees’ terms are coming to an end in the coming year. The trustees have identified some key skill sets that can help FYT’s strategic development:
- Business and marketing acumen
FYT are at the stage of starting to generate some income from the services we offer to schools and nurseries. We are seeking a trustee wo can help us develop our commercial approach.
- Campaigning and media
FYT would like to grow our awareness raising techniques at community level and to maximise the opportunities presented by media to get our success stories out there.
- Private sector expertise
We aim to improve our links with the world of business, to create partnerships with the business sector. This is not only to diversify our funding streams but also to explore ways to engage employers and employees in some of the key messages on supporting a child’s early development.
FYT’s Board meets three times yearly, usually in London. Our Trustees provide guidance on the strategic direction of the charity, but do not need to be involved with the operational detail which is managed by our two senior director positions. Individual trustees may engage with the team at different points on specific issues but we are mindful of the fact that most of our trustees are working full time.
