Trustee Vacancy: Chair of the Board of Trustees and Trustees at North West Cancer Research

North West Cancer Research (NWCR) is a vibrant regional charity which is now seeking a new Chair of the Board of Trustees along with new members of the Board. You will join us at an exciting time in our development as we update our brand and focus on needs of people in our region. You will play a leading role in advancing the fight against cancer, and in improving its diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

NWCR is an organisation which is changing and evolving, building upon our proud history and making sure that we are fit for the challenges of the future. We are increasingly recognising the cancer challenges which make our region different to other parts of the country. Each year, around 45,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed in our region, and at least 19,000 people will die from cancer. Cancer diagnosis rates are 25% higher than the average for England as a whole and cancers such as lung cancer pose a more significant threat than they do elsewhere. Within our region we have a wealth of excellent health providers, but often people do not engage with them until the cancer is well developed. This makes the cancer harder to treat and means that it is more damaging to the individual.

As a Charity we have been funding research into cancer since 1948. This has enabled us to form excellent links with local research establishments with a core network which includes the Universities at Liverpool, Lancaster and Bangor. We are members of the Association of Medical Research Charities which is our badge of quality. Membership means that we meet high standards of research governance and as a funder we punch above our weight. This year we will make around £2.5m of research funding commitments – funding work in the North-West and North Wales which benefits the people of our region and adding to the £42m of funding already committed since 2000.

Our challenges are similar to those of many other charities. We need to grow our brand and our income, and ensure that we raise money from a wide range of different sources. We need to be better known to the people of the North-West and to the businesses which generate wealth in our area.  We will shortly be launching a re-brand and hope to use this, along with a new team structure to grow our fundraised income. As a Charity we need to compete in a complex environment and make sure it is our message that is heard.

For the Chair of NWCR, you’ll play a key strategic leadership role. Drawing on the expertise and experience of other Board Members and senior leaders within the organisation, you will help to foster a supportive and challenging culture, ensuring that sound governance underpins key business decisions. Highly-developed communication and relationship building skills will be essential to this role. The emphasis will be on building consensus, but also asking challenging questions to get there.

As Chair we very much hope that you’ll use your connections through the communities and businesses of the region in order to help us grow our brand and our fundraising. A key attribute will be the ability to open doors for the Charity which will enable us to grow and beat cancer in our region.

In addition, the Board of Trustees are seeking to make a number of new appointments to the Board to strengthen its knowledge, skill base and connections. In particular we are interested in recruiting individuals with knowledge in the following areas:

  • Population health or a clinician
  • Fundraising
  • IT and digital marketing
  • Influencers and those who are well networked into the local community.

For further information on becoming the Chair of the Board of Trustees, or a Member of the Board please email the CEO, Alastair Richards at [email protected] Additional information is available for applicants to guide you in understanding the roles available and the skills we’re looking for.
