Our weekly Funding Bulletin contains a collection of articles that either feature a funder or is an interesting item associated with the world of fundraising.
Your Wirral, a fund jointly administered by Wirral Council and not-for-profit housing provider Magenta Living, has made available £250,000 to support local groups. If you are a voluntary or community organisation working in Wirral West, you may be eligible for a grant of up to £2,500 to support any activities that address one or more of the following themes:
• Creating an attractive and safe environment;
• Contributing to community economic regeneration;
• Preventing crime or reducing the fear of crime;
• Providing employment and training for local people;
• Benefiting local people who face discrimination;
• Improving community facilities;
• Engaging communities to improve quality of life
Funds are available for each of the four constituency areas in Wirral (Birkenhead, Wallasey, Wirral South and Wirral West), and for Wirral-wide projects. The deadline for applications is noon on 14th September 2015.

Natalie Brandon – Big Lottery Reaching communities is happy to look at first drafts, has had a lot of applications around asylum seekers, and mental health, is advising groups looking for continuation funding to put in for continuation funding at the end of year two. And to also look at applying for capacity funding.
An advisor from Sefton mentioned the Power to Change funding for community businesses. The fund is closing shortly on the 23rd July to reassess their ways of working, but will reopen on the 1st September. They say on the website that the ‘majority of this funding will be awarded through our Initial Grants Programme, an initiative that has been specifically designed to help new and existing community businesses that are in a position to make a step change in their journey towards long term sustainability within the next six months’. http://www.thepowertochange.org.uk/programmes/funding/
Halton Borough Council have produced a bid writing manual which looks very comprehensive, in a ring binder with pull out sheets. They are charging £25 for it.
They also mentioned that there is now training available specifically for Heritage organisations around funding through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Institute of Fundraising
Heart Research UK Healthy Heart Grants of up to £5,000 and up to £10,000 are available across the UK for new, original and innovative projects that actively promote Heart Health and help to prevent, or reduce, the risk of heart disease in specific groups or communities. To give you an idea about the type of projects we have recently funded, have a look at our current Healthy Heart projects and our highlights, but remember we’re always on the lookout for innovative, new projects that promote heart health. There are two rounds each year. Applications for the autumn round can be submitted during July and August with a closing date of 31 August. The DM Thomas Foundation for young people has a rigorous grant process which aims to identify the most effective projects helping disadvantaged young people in the UK and Ireland. Applications from registered charities in the UK and Ireland are first assessed by the Foundation office, with a shortlist of approximately 25 of the strongest and regionally representative applications put forward for consideration by our Grants Committee. There is approximately £150,000 available to distribute each quarter. Applications working in the areas of education or health with one of our four chosen focus groups are selected or considered:
Children and young people with disabilities
Children and young people who are sick in hospital
Children and young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness
Children and young people who are life limited (requiring palliative care)
If favoured, grant applications for up to £10,000 can be approved by the Committee, and applications for more than £10,000 are recommended to the Trustees for final approval. The Foundation is a small charity and generally will not make awards of over £30,000 (per year). We have launched the Liverpool ONE Foundation Programme 1 again this week and it would be great if you could pass this message on to any groups you are working with/aware of please. The Liverpool ONE Foundation does not have a deadline and we will close the fund as soon as we have sufficient applications. Applicants should ensure they demonstrate how their proposed project meets the Liverpool ONE Foundation priorities below.

• Employability
• Education
In addition we encourage applicants to consider ‘Social Value’ within their applications. What we are looking to see is the long term impact funding may have within a community and to its beneficiaries. For example, what the project will offer towards helping people access employment, training, IT support etc; If equipment is sourced locally; If staff and/or volunteers are recruited locally from within the community the project is targeted at. Projects must still represent value for money but we would like to see the additional benefits, the social value, your project aims to make in the community it will serve’. Programme 1 – Small Grants Programme: Grants are available of up to £5,000 for community groups with an annual income in total of £200,000. This programme is aimed at grassroots groups undertaking activity based projects. The panel are keen to see applications from groups that are in-line with their core aims and objectives and those that can demonstrate match funding, financial or in-kind contributions. The expectation is that grants will primarily fund direct project costs and applications are welcomed from those that clearly evidence their sustainability plans. http://www.cfmerseyside.org.uk/index.php?p=213
The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) is, once again, able to make
available money taken from loan sharks to be used to benefit local communities.
The good news is that for the year 2015-2016 organisations will be able to apply for
up to £5,000 to directly target an area affected by, or believed to be at risk of illegal
money lending to promote the illegal money lending team and the message that loan
sharks should be avoided at all costs. Your project idea will need to target illegal money lending and needs to be delivered by the 31st March 2016. If you are interested in applying and would like to know more about the funding criteria, please contact [email protected]

Arranged by Community Action Wirral, organisations in Wirral are being offered a bespoke ‘Effective Presentations’ workshop by Diana Todd, Director of Sales at the Marriott Hotel in Liverpool. This is a full day workshop commencing at 9 am and finishing at 6 pm. Lunch will be at 1 pm for an hour, and there will be two additional 15 minute comfort breaks. The workshop is hard hitting, intense and full of tips, tools and feedback to staff, volunteers and trustees, to enable them to develop and deliver excellent presentations on behalf of their organisations. This is a workshop which will build on personal skills and enable Wirral organisations to become more sustainable in the long term as they have an improved ability to sell and market themselves to potential funders and sponsors.
