RiseUp works with prisons, schools, the long term unemployed and those at risk of offending within the wider community. It was established in 2015 to empower individuals to better their circumstances, prospects and well being.
The organisation delivers courses in schools, Pupil Referral Units and prisons throughout the UK. The arts of rap, poetry, drama and crafts to name a few, are used to get people in the room and build rapport. The team then teach techniques to help people take control of their own thoughts, feelings and actions.
RiseUp is fronted by Wirral resident, Ashleigh Nugent. Ashleigh is an award winning author, playwright and rapper. The work done by Ashleigh and the team has become vital in community organisations and prisons across the country in challenging behaviour patterns.
Ashleigh uses his own lived experience of turning his life around, from a life of petty crime and violence to a life of education, community arts and writing.
LOCKS was published by Ashleigh Nugent last year and is based on the time he spent his 17th birthday in a Jamaican detention centre. It is an inspiring journey of self discovery and exploration of racial identity.
