Wirral Met College has re-launched its Learning Shop in the Pyramids Shopping Centre as a social enterprise for Prep 4 Life students, who have learning difficulties. The students have been running their enterprise for the past couple of years in Birkenhead Market and are now expanding their services within the college’s shop, located next to Marks and Spencer.
The shop will provide the students with a workshop where they can produce high quality merchandise including artwork, picture frames, and PopArt pictures, and a shop front to enable them to sell their goods to the public. At this time of the year, they are offering local people with the perfect opportunity to buy unique Christmas presents. The students have held very successful art exhibitions in the past and the shop will enable them to plan future exhibitions over the coming year.
During the launch event, the students took part in a Cosplay (costume play) themed competition where they dressed, spoke and moved in characters of their choice. The College’s singing and signing choirs provided excellent performances and the students baked fresh cakes to serve with tea and coffee for customers visiting the shop.
Maura Cummins, Acting Deputy Principal at Wirral Met College, said, “I’m delighted to have been able to join the students and staff as they re-launch their social enterprise in the shop. The social enterprise activities provide our Prep 4 Life students with practical skills, experience and the confidence to work and live independently. I would encourage shoppers to call in and take a look at the merchandise for sale; I’m sure they will be very impressed with the quality and choice of gifts available.”

ABCD Health & Well-being event – Tuesday 6th December 2016, from 9.30am to 2.00pm at the Conway Park Campus – come along to find out more about a whole-hearted, whole-person approach to treating mind, body and spirit. Beauty, Complementary Therapy and Hairdressing students will provide free treatments and there will be a number of organisations providing information on health and well-being services in the area.
