Rather than walking a mile in their shoes, a charity is asking the public to stand in solidarity with people affected by leprosy by taking their shoes off!
Leprosy damages the nerves in your hands and feet so that you can’t feel things. So walking barefoot, farming in the fields, cooking over a fire, etc becomes life threatening with leprosy. Sometimes doctors have to amputate fingers, toes or even whole limbs if a wound gets infected as this is often the only way to save a person’s life.
Our biggest worry when going barefoot are people treading on our toes – whereas people affected by leprosy may not even have any toes if they’ve had to be amputated because of infection!
So whether you will be travelling on the bus, going shopping or walking the dog, join the Leprosy Mission’s Feet First Campaign and do it all bare foot!
The campaign runs until the 31st August and all you have to do is choose one day in that time to go Feet First and raise money and awareness for the cause. As an added incentive, the UK government is matching donations to the campaign, meaning the money you raise will have twice the impact and the potential to change twice as many lives!
