In 2015, there were approx.133,000 people in the UK living with HIV, 1 in 4 of those are undiagnosed.
An estimated 1,143,899 HIV tests were conducted in GUM services in England in 2014. The total number of new STIs in the north west of England remains high; this not only serves as an indicator of sexual risk-taking behaviour, but also increases the probability of HIV transmission.
In 2014 late diagnosis of HIV remains an important public health issue in the UK, with 40% of people diagnosed late and potentially not as responsive to life saving medication.
Ageing and heterosexual populations are common groups disproportionately affected by late diagnosis. Amongst healthcare professionals, missed diagnostic opportunities are well documented and are linked to HCPs perceptions of risk and a lack of knowledge of HIV and testing procedures.
Over recent years Wirral has seen an increase in the number of people diagnosed including more cases within our ageing population who need more complex care. Merseyside, including Wirral, has a high level of late HIV diagnosis and lower uptake of HIV testing and given not all HIV positive people use statutory HIV treatments centres or social care services, it is more important than ever that local public services are up to date with HIV information, support, referral and prevention resources.
HIV positive people often experience discrimination in health and social care settings mainly because staff not are current with their knowledge resulting in ill-informed and outdated attitudes and perceptions of HIV which then affects client care.
HIV from point of diagnosis is classed as a disability and many HIV positive people have experienced difficulties at work in relation to disclosure, receiving up to date HR support and potential discrimination in the workplace. Keeping people in work and out of the poverty trap is essential for wellbeing and maintaining strong workforces.
In 2015 – 2016 health and social care professionals who attended Sahir House HIV awareness & stigma reduction course reported:
100% said that the training helped reduce HIV related stigma
Before attending the training 51% of participants were not confident to talk to clients about HIV testing. After the training 70% reported feeling very confident to talk to clients regarding HIV testing.
Before the training 53% of participants were not aware of where to signpost people to HIV testing services, afterwards 76% participants felt very aware. 100% found the HIV positive guest speaker very effective in helping their learning, 100% would recommend this training to a colleague/agency
