Frank Field MP has revealed that Wirral Council’s expenditure on Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP) to tenants pushed into arrears by the Bedroom Tax rose by over £300,000 last year.
The Government gives each council a limited DHP grant to help mitigate some of the worst effects of the Bedroom Tax. However, the DHP grant does not ensure all tenants requiring emergency help with housing costs will receive it.
Last year, the final amount paid in DHP by Wirral Council was £791,502 – up £317,962 from £473,540 in 2013-14.
