Approximately 5,785 children in Wirral are benefiting from free healthy meals and a range of thrilling activities throughout the summer, following a nationwide grant of £1.8 million awarded by the government.

The Edsential Summer Holiday programme, ran by Edsential CIC and Partners, succeeded in accessing funding to coordinate holiday activity and provide food for eligible families in need over the summer holiday period throughout West Cheshire, Halton and Wirral.

This year, the programme offers over 100 holiday clubs with 34 in Wirral alone, that provide a range of physical activities, diverse enrichment sessions, as well as a whole host of online resources for children and families who have chosen to self-isolate.

All clubs are run by experienced organisations that provide a safe and welcoming experience where children can have fun and make new friends in the process.

Funded by the Department for Education, it is hoped that the £1.8 million grant will help support over 5,700 children across Wirral with a range of opportunities, including family cooking sessions, a variety of online and physical activities such as Yoga, dance, HIIT and adventure play, making the most of outdoor spaces whilst abiding by social distancing guidelines.
The clubs also offer a range of diverse activities including arts and crafts, forest school, gardening clubs and many more.

Adam Mellor, Coordination at Wirral Holiday Activity Fund, said:
“This summer we have 48 Wirral projects delivering fun and engaging activities with nutritious meals for free school meal eligible children and families.

“The passion and dedication during this difficult time to deliver this much need project is inspiring. Due to the Covid-19 crisis, things must be delivered differently. For Wirral, this has become a creative, innovative and inspiring effort to reach the most children we can.

The funding from Department for Education, via Edsential CIC, has been a huge boost to the families of Wirral. I would like to thank all partners in making this summer one of the best yet. We are reaching over 5,700 children and countless communities and families!”

All activity clubs are free of charge for eligible free school meal children and their families. The full list of clubs taking place on Wirral can be found here.

Booking is essential so it is important to get in touch with the relevant provider.
