Following a successful bid from local artists and tutors, year 7 children from schools in Birkenhead will now have the opportunity to enjoy free creative activities beginning in November.
The ‘This is Me’ programme of after school sessions will be run by artist Jane Gordon from Crafters & Makers, Andy Yates, the Creative Producer at Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery and Charlie Lea, principal of literary arts organisation ‘Read Now Write Now’.
The programme will last six weeks, giving children the chance to learn how to take photographs, create a photo story, screen print, and even make their own customised bag.
Children will also be able to write and perform a story about themselves with a general theme on how they have transitioned from primary to secondary school.
Funding for the project has come from the North West’s bridge organisation Curious Minds, and its ‘Bubble Up’ commission funding scheme.
Charlie Lea, said:
“I am so looking forward to working with year seven children on this exciting project. It has been, and still is, the most trying year imaginable and we want to help inspire, boost health and wellbeing, and capture the children’s thoughts and ideas as they look back on moving up and into secondary school.
“I am sure that the children who attend will absolutely love taking part in all the sessions.”
The sessions will all take place at Wirral Change, 12-14 St Laurence Drive, Birkenhead CH41 3JD on the following days and times:
- Monday 9th November, 4pm-6pm
- Monday 16th November, 4pm-6pm
- Monday 23rd November, 4pm-6pm
- Monday 30th November, 4pm-6pm
- Monday 7th December, 4pm-6pm
- Monday 14th December, 4pm-6pm
There are 45 spaces available, and bookings are taken on a first come, first served basis. Children must live in the Birkenhead constituency to attend.
COVID-19 compliance will be adhered to throughout the project and children will be allocated into a bubble group of 15.
