Counsellor with Wirral Hospice St John’s


Counsellor (Band 6) Part-time, 18¾ hours per week – Salary £26,048 – £34,775 pro rata

Wirral Hospice St John’s is a proactive and forward thinking Specialist Palliative Care Unit providing a range of services including an Inpatient area and a fast developing Outpatient and Day Therapy Services.

Our objectives align to the national priorities in Palliative and End of Life Care, which are to strive to maintain and develop quality services. Specifically, our objectives are to continue to maintain and improve quality of services to ensure patients and their families receive a positive experience.

The successful candidate will be an integral part of the Patient and Family Support Team and work across the hospice within the wider Multi Professional Team. They will coordinate the routine delivery of Counselling to patients and their families or close carers and work with the Patient and Family Support Services Manager on identifying service development opportunities.

They will deliver a flexible counselling service and have a range of skilled approaches to meet individual need, working in individual, family or group settings as is required. Proven competencies on the delivery of short term interventions and the ability to build a rapport very quickly will be an advantage. They will have a role in supporting students and volunteers working within the hospice.

The role requires; proven abilities in delivering counselling care, managing a case load and a demonstrable understanding of working with loss, deteriorating health and bereavement.  Ideally the successful candidate will have previously worked within a health care or multi professional setting will be an advantage.

The post holder will need to have strong interpersonal and administrative skills, and the ability to maintain their own identity and integrity as the only counsellor in the organisation. They will need good leadership, training and organisational skills with the ability to work flexibly under their own initiative as well as part of a multi professional team.

The regular hours will be week days only, with the expectation of some evening work and occasional weekend work
